Human Research Participant Protection in the Indian Health Service

HIPAA

Researchers working with any kind of clinical information should also be aware of the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Useful web-based courses on this can be found at the Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPAA/HIPS) Training modules from U. Miami (CITI provider); and at the training provided by UCLA. When appropriate, IHS IRBs will provide the HIPAA waivers necessary for a study to be conducted. In applications to the IHS IRBs, researchers should state whether their project requires a HIPAA waiver and if so, how it qualifies for one.
