Patuxent Scientist Neckles Participates in Park Break 2008 at On March 4, Hilary Neckles and Martha Nielsen (Maine Water Science Center) participated in Park Break! 2008 at Acadia National Park. This is the pilot year of a cooperative venture by USGS, NPS, the Student Conservation Association, George Wright Society, and Texas A&M University designed to develop the next generation of park management, conservation, and science professionals. Acadia was one of four national parks to host week-long field seminars for graduate students focusing on issues that are critical to the sustainable management of protected areas in the United States. The theme of Acadia's program was "civic engagement" and seven graduate students from diverse backgrounds participated. Neckles and Nielsen joined Acadia staff and the town Planning Director in leading discussions on the ecology and protection of park estuaries with watersheds that are largely outside the park's boundaries.
