Improving Habitat Management Dr. Michael Erwin was invited to attend two Biological Reviews at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR October 19 and 20, 2006. The purposes of the Reviews are for USFWS staff to meet with experts outside the Service to gather input for preparation of their Comprehensive Conservation Plans (CCP) or Habitat Management Plans (HMP) for the respective refuges. Because of Dr. Erwin's long involvement with research on Virginia's coast, and at both of these refuges over a 30 + year period, he was invited to help them formulate planning to improve habitat conditions in impoundments, barrier island breeding and migration habitat, and to review predator management policies. DNA and Survival of Woodcock Chicks Dan McAuley, Station Leader, PWRC Orono, ME attended the 10th American Woodcock Symposium held in Roscommon, MI on October 3-6. McAuley presented 4 talks on past and current woodcock research projects ranging from determining paternity using DNA to survival of woodcock chicks and broods, incubation constancy, and monitoring migration using an automated recording system. He was also invited to give 2 other presentations on the Effect of Hunting on Woodcock survival in the Northeast and Habitat Management for woodcock on breeding areas in the Northeast. The Symposium was attended by nearly 100 scientists and resource managers from the U.S and from France, Great Britain, and Belarus.
