Weights and Measures Economic Statistics

2003

The weights and measures benchmark study will collect information that will provide a basis for weights and measures administrators to compare their program activities and allocation of resources to those of other jurisdictions. The number of businesses and amount of sales within each state are important parameters in the evaluation of the allocation of resources.

The data contained in these files were taken from the Economic Census conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. The U.S. Census Bureau conducts an economic survey every five years. In 1992 the economic census used the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system to classify the data. In 1997 the data were classified using both the SIC system and the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). The NAICS changed the groupings of businesses contained in the many categories of the economic census. In many cases, the SIC and the NAICS classifications cannot be compared since the business groupings are not the same. Data were collected by state for specific retail and industry sectors in which weights and measures inspections are routinely conducted.
