Global Gas Outlook
World natural gas consumption and production are expected to increase by more than 50 percent from 2005 through 2030. Asia is expected to become the world’s number one gas consumer, taking over that spot from North America, as China’s economy grows 6.4 percent annually. Non-OECD countries are expected to account for more than 70 percent of the world’s total growth in consumption and production of natural gas over the forecast period. A significant portion of the non-OECD production growth is expected to be in the form of export projects, particularly LNG projects. World LNG trade is projected to more than double by 2030, with the center of the trade moving away from northeast Asia toward an even Atlantic/Pacific basin split. Distribution of Natural Gas: The Final Step in the Transmission Process
This special report analyzes the role of local distribution companies (LDCs) and transmission pipelines in delivering natural gas supplies to end-use customers, focusing upon the years 1996 through 2006. It also examines the changing dynamics of natural gas end-use markets, especially the trend toward large-volume users such as electric power generation plants and large industrial users receiving greater portions of their supplies from mainline natural gas transmission pipeline companies rather than the traditional LDC. Categories: Import/Export & Pipelines, Consumption (Released, 6/27/2008, pdf format)
U.S. Natural Gas Storage and The Global LNG Market
U.S. natural gas storage operators are in a good position to take advantage of growing liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade. With the largest storage capacity in the world, the United States has the capability to import LNG in the summer for winter peak use. The normal falloff in global natural gas demand during the summer frees up some LNG supplies, but storage operators in many countries compete for this gas. The ability of U.S. operators to attract LNG supplies depends on the relative prices in the United States and other countries. At the same time, LNG imports compete with domestic supplies. Categories: Storage (Released, 6/24/2008, ppt format)
What are natural gas customer choice programs?
Customer choice programs let households and small commercial establishments purchase natural gas from someone other than their traditional utility company. However, utility companies still deliver the natural gas to consumers. Categories: Consumption (Released, 6/17/2008)
Is U.S. natural gas production increasing?
Natural gas production in the Lower 48 States has seen a large upward shift. After 9 years of no net growth through 2006, an upward trend began that generated 3% growth between first-quarter 2006 and first-quarter 2007, followed by an exceptionally large 9% increase between first-quarter 2007 and first-quarter 2008. Categories: Production, Exploration & Reserves (Released, 6/11/2008)
What is liquefied natural gas (LNG) and how is it becoming an energy source for the United States?
The United States imports about 16% of the natural gas we consume. Most of these imports are delivered by pipeline (from Canada). But a growing volume of natural gas is coming to the United States in liquid form from overseas. With the demand for natural gas expected to increase, it's likely that U.S. imports of LNG also will need to increase. Categories: Imports & Exports/Pipelines (Released, 5/1/2008)
U.S. Storage Drawdown Analysis Report
This report examines contract terms that require owners of natural gas in storage to reduce their holdings of working gas to specified levels by certain dates or risk incurring penalties. If they were sufficiently restrictive, such constraints could result in the introduction of significant natural gas volumes into the market toward the end of the heating season. Although many tariffs or service agreements include these restrictions, they are not pervasive and their impact may be less than previously expected. An Analysis of Price Volatility in Natural Gas Markets
This article presents an analysis of price volatility in the spot natural gas market, with particular emphasis on the Henry Hub in Louisiana. The purpose is to address whether natural gas prices have been more volatile in recent years and identify potential market factors that may contribute to price volatility. In addition to a first-order autoregressive error model, several graphical and statistical tools are used to examine trends and determine influencing factors. Although there is no demonstrated long-term trend in volatility, there are seasonal patterns and volatility is correlated strongly with storage dynamics. The Relationship Between Crude Oil and Natural Gas Prices
This report examines the time series econometric relationship between the Henry Hub natural gas price and the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price. Typically, this relationship has been approached using simple correlations and deterministic trends. When data have unit roots as in this case, such analysis is faulty and subject to spurious results. A cointegrating relationship relating Henry Hub prices to the WTI and trend capturing the relative demand and supply effects over the 1989-through-2005 period is found. The dynamics of the relationship suggest a 1-month temporary shock to the WTI of 20 percent has a 5-percent contemporaneous impact on natural gas prices, but is dissipated to 2 percent in 2 months. A permanent shock of 20 percent in the WTI leads to a 16 percent increase in the Henry Hub price 1 year out all else equal.

Withdrawals from Working Natural Gas Stocks During Summer 2006
This report examines the net withdrawals of 7 and 12 billion cubic feet (Bcf) during the weeks ending July 21, 2006, and August 4, 2006 reported in the Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report. These summer-time withdrawals are notable because they marked the first two times that working natural gas stocks experienced a weekly net decline during the months of May through September in the 12-year history of the weekly stocks data. The report finds that a combination of electricity and fuel market developments accounts for the atypical working natural gas inventory behavior, including above-normal levels of working gas stocks, increased gas-fired electric generation, extremely hot temperatures in the Lower-48 States, and backwardation in the near-month natural gas futures contract.

EIA The Northeast Natural Gas Market in 2030
LNG imports have grown substantially in recent years and they are expected to grow sevenfold by 2030. A review of the industry and infrastructure in the Northeast shows a region with limited indigenous production, so the region relies on flows into the area for most of the natural gas it consumes. A key source of supply is the LNG import terminal located in Everett, Massachusetts, which provides about 20 percent of regional supply. The United States needs additional LNG imports to meet future natural gas demand, however, building new LNG terminals in the Northeast or elsewhere involves a number of tradeoffs that will depend on energy markets and local acceptance. (Presentation, 9/27/06)
Estimates of Maximum Underground Working Gas Storage Capacity in the United States
This report examines the aggregate maximum capacity for U.S. natural gas storage. Although the concept of maximum capacity seems quite straightforward, there are numerous issues that preclude the determination of a definitive maximum volume. The report presents three alternative estimates for maximum capacity, indicating appropriate caveats for each. It suggests that a conservative estimate of maximum capacity is the sum of non-coincident peak volumes over all facilities during 2000-2004. (Published, 09/19/2006, pdf format )
