Technical Security

Physical Security Specialist

The Secret Service ONLY accepts applications during current vacancy announcement periods. Physical Security Specialists are assigned to the Technical Security Division (TSD) of the U.S. Secret Service. TSD is responsible for providing a secure environment for all protectees at both permanent and temporary locations. TSD also conducts technical surveillance operations to support the Secret Service investigative mission.

Major Duties

A Physical Security Specialist provides technical expertise and operational support to identify hazards and implement countermeasures while conducting security surveys, vulnerability assessments and protection assignments. These duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Install and maintain intrusion detection, video assessment and access control systems
  • Install and operate technical surveillance equipment in support of criminal investigations
  • Conduct fire and life safety surveys, evaluate fire protection systems and implement fire/rescue protective countermeasures and personnel evacuation plans
  • Develop and implement countermeasures to explosive threats against protected persons and/or facilities
  • Develop and implement countermeasures to chemical/biological/radiological threats against protected persons and/or facilities
  • Evaluate and analyze facilities and structures to support the protection mission
  • Serve as liaison with local, state, federal and foreign law enforcement officials
Minimum Requirements
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens
  • All applicants who are not currently employed under the law enforcement provisions of FERS or the Civil Service Retirement System, must be less than 40 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Successfully complete a background investigation to include in-depth interviews, drug screening, medical examination and a polygraph examination
  • All applicants must be physically fit (weight in proportion to height) and eyesight correctable to 20/20 in each eye
Conditions of Employment
  • Newly appointed Physical Security Specialists are assigned to the Washington, D.C., area. Throughout their careers, physical security specialists may experience frequent travel and reassignment to Secret Service offices located throughout the United States or liaison assignments in foreign countries.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify that they have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under Selective Service law.

  • Annual leave accumulates at a rate of 13 to 26 days each year depending on length of employment. Prior federal civilian or military service is counted toward the annual leave account, as authorized.

  • Comprehensive retirement benefits additional retirement credit is granted for prior military or federal government service, as authorized

To be considered for this position, you must submit the information as outlined in the vacancy announcement, to include ALL SELECTIVE FACTORS and KSA REQUIREMENTS. If you fail to submit all of the information requested in the vacancy announcement, you will not be considered for this position.

  • A copy of your most recent SF 50, Notification of Personnel Action - when applicable
  • A copy of your most recent annual performance appraisal. If a current performance appraisal is not included, you must indicate why the appraisal is not included.
