EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Student Temporary Employment Program (Student Assistant)

The Secret Service Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) is designed to provide federal employment opportunities to students so that they can resume or continue their education without interruptions caused by financial pressures. The STEP program provides maximum flexibility to both the student and manager because the nature of the work does not have to be related to the student's academic or career goals.

Eligibility

Students must meet the following requirements in order to be considered for the STEP Program:

  • At least 16 years of age at the time of appointment
  • U.S. citizen
  • Enrolled or have been accepted for enrollment during the upcoming semester or quarter as a full-time or part-time student in high school, or in an educational institution not above the graduate level that is accredited by a recognized accrediting body
  • Self certify typing ability of 40 words per minute
  • Working toward a diploma, certificate or degree
  • Maintaining a satisfactory academic record of a 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average
  • Not a son or daughter of a Secret Service employee

Assignments and Leave

Most assignments are of a clerical nature and no previous experience is required. Students are eligible for paid annual and sick leave. For every 20 hours worked, one hour of sick leave and one hour of annual leave will be accrued.

Working Hours

As a student assistant with the Secret Service, you will work part-time while school is in session and full-time during summers and official school breaks. While school is in session, your work schedule will be limited to a minimum of 16 hours a week and a maximum of 24 hours a week. Your working hours are determined by the office to which you are assigned. Under this program, you are eligible for reappointment each year as long as the conditions listed under "Eligibility" are still met.

Salary and Promotions

The pay will depend on the education and work experience you already possess. As you advance in your education, you may be eligible for promotions based on your work performance, grade point average and credits earned. Pay is based on the General Schedule (GS) grades 1-5.

Eligibility and Verification for Continued Employment

At the beginning of each fall semester/quarter, each student will be asked to produce a letter of verification from his/her educational institution showing proof of enrollment in school for the upcoming semester/quarter either as a part-time or as a full-time student.

A transcript or grades from the previous semester is required to show that you still maintain a 2.5 GPA or better. You have two weeks after the beginning of the new fall semester to submit your verification.
