Every year the same pod of orcas visits the Kodiak Harbor. The Whale Fest Whale Alert Program announces the arrival of the "Kodiak Killers" to the Kodiak harbor and other whale sightings around Kodiak Island through the media.

Whale Fest Kodiak  (http://www.whalefestkodiak.org)  is an annual community event timed to coincide with the spring northbound migration of the gray whales as they pass Kodiak Island, Alaska. The week-long event in April highlights marine mammals with lectures, art shows, movies, school activities, a parade, and more for all ages.

In 2007, Whale Fest Kodiak’s 11th year, the AFSC Kodiak Laboratory continued its history of involvement with this event. Mike Litzow (AFSC) presented his lecture "Effects of global warming on Bering Sea fish and crustaceans," and Kodiak staff also assisted with Whale Fest-sponsored whalewatching trips to Narrow Cape for 3rd - 6th graders from three elementary schools in Kodiak.

Educational activities on the beach and along the bus route focused on the gray whale migration and the nature of Kodiak Island. Many of these kids had never been to Narrow Cape to witness the gray whale migration first-hand!
