Response Cruise Participants

Prior SOSUS-detected Gorda Activity:

A response expedition was conducted aboard Scripps Institution's RV New Horizon based in San Diego. The ship departed Eureka, California, April 10 and returned April 16. Equipment on board included:

  • CTD rosette water sampler
  • Underwater near-bottom towed camera and temperature system
  • Dredge
  • Water analysis equipment for particulates, trace metals and gas content
  • Microbiology analysis and culturing equipment

25 vertical CTD casts yielded no detectable hydrothermal plumes. 2 camera tows were conducted and showed no evidence of a new lava flow. Apparently the intrusion of magma at depth that caused the earthquake swarm never reached the seafloor to erupt.

USCG Ship Healy conducted a multibeam survey, CTDs and dredges on site enroute from Seattle to San Francisco on its scientific shakedown trip prior its maiden science voyage to the Arctic. Cruise report is available here.
