WIC Bean Book

WIC Bean Book
This new recipe book from Washington State has "bean" designed with WIC in mind. The book is a new way of looking at the topic of bean cookery and incorporates the stages of change model. Some recipes require more bean-skills, while some require fewer bean-skills; therefore, the book invites the bean cook to choose a recipe based on whether they are a Bean-ginner or a Well-seasoned bean cook (or their stage of change on the bean cooking scale).

WIC Participant Food Shopping and Consumption Habits Survey [WORD]
In July-August 2007, California WIC surveyed 3,085 WIC families to learn what foods WIC participants favor and what they would be likely to choose if WIC offered new foods. In most cases, the mother was interviewed, and the responses pertain to 4,559 participants in the families selected. The survey data provide a rich and representative snapshot of current WIC participant food shopping practices, consumption habits and attitudes in a large and diverse state. The data will help inform California WIC’s approach to implementing the new rules and may be useful to other state and local WIC practitioners as they plan for implementation of changes to WIC foods and design nutrition education materials and promotional campaigns for WIC families.

WIC Staff Food Shopping and Consumption Habits Survey [WORD]
In January-March 2008, California WIC Program conducted a statewide survey of local agency WIC staff to learn what foods they purchase and consume, the reasons for their choices, what might influence them to make healthier choices, their opinions about upcoming food package changes, and their preferences for education and training tools and methods to help them implement the changes.  1,801 staff representing 89% of the 82 local WIC agencies voluntarily completed this self-administered survey using Vanguard Vista, an on-line survey tool.  Local agencies were given the capability to run the statewide report as well as reports customized for their own agency or WIC site.

The survey data provide valuable information on current practices, opinions, and attitudes of the WIC staff relevant to the WIC foods and the anticipated changes to the food packages.  The results will inform the California WIC program in development of training materials for local agencies.  In addition, local WIC administrators will be able to target staff training effectively using the local data.
