HURSAT MW Data

Version = Beta

The data is in beta release. This means that the netCDF data structure (e.g., variable names, attributes) could likely change before the public release (version 1) is made.

Sample NetCDF CDL

A sample netCDF CDL file (i.e., output from ncdump -h) is available.

Data Access

Contact Ken Knapp for access to the data.

File naming convention

YgYgYgYgDgDgDgBBLtLtLnLn-NNN.YYYY.MM.DD.HHMM.SS.Sat.WWW.hursat-mw.VER.nc

  • YgYgYgYg - Four digit year denoting the year of storm genesis
  • DgDgDg - 3 digit day of year of storm genesis
  • BB - Basin of genesis:
    • EP - East Pacific
    • WP - West Pacific
    • SP - South Pacific
    • IO - Indian Ocean
    • NA - North Atlantic
  • LtLt - Absolute value of the latitude of the storm genesis location (rounded to the nearest integer). Latitude values are positive except for SP storms, which are negative.
  • LnLnLn - Longitude of the storm genesis (rounded to nearest integer) (0-359)
  • NNN - First three letters of the name of the storm (mmm = storm name not available).
  • YYYY - Year of the satellite observation.
  • MM - Month of year of the satellite observation.
  • DD - Day of month of the satellite observation.
  • HHmm - Hour (HH) and minute (mm) of the satellite observation. All times are in the Universal Time Coordinate (UTC).
  • SS - Scan number [1-64]. Location in the low resolution scan of the storm center. The center of the scan is pixel 32 with scan edges at 1 and 64
  • Sat - SSMI Satellite ID
  • WWW - Wind speed from the best track data
  • VER - Data set version (currently "beta")
