Lab hosts 12th annual HAZMAT Challenge
July 14 — Fourteen teams are scheduled to participate in the 12th annual HAZMAT Challenge taking place July 15 – 18 at the Laboratory’s HAZMAT Training Facility at Technical Area 49.

Astronomy Days lectures begin July 8 at Bradbury Science Museum
July 2 — A series of six evening lectures that focus on astronomy and the space sciences begins Tuesday, July 8, at Los Alamos Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum.

Supercomputing Challenge April 21-22
April 17 — More than 250 New Mexico middle- and high-school students will be at LANL next Monday and Tuesday (April 21-22) for judging and awards in the 18th annual New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge.

Los Alamos National Laboratory Supports San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen
September 13 — An Española soup kitchen will soon be able to expand its outreach efforts thanks to the work of Los Alamos National Laboratory and several local businesses and nonprofits.

LANL Furthering Economic Development in Northern New Mexico
July 31 — Los Alamos National Security, LLC will enter into a first-ever mentor-protégé agreement with TSAY Construction and Services, LLC, a small business 100 percent owned and operated by Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo (formerly San Juan Pueblo) located just north of Los Alamos.

Laboratory subcontractors contribute to economic development fund
July 18 — Los Alamos National Laboratory subcontract companies on Wednesday donated more than $100,000 to help further economic development efforts in Northern New Mexico.

Los Alamos National Security, LLC invests in local communities
June 5 — At a Laboratory-sponsored regional community leadership breakfast, Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio presented checks for $100,000 to New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) President Jim Fries and Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) Executive Vice President Tom Garcia.

Frontiers in Science Lecture Series Mixes it Up
May 17 — Robert Ecke, a Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist, will discuss “The Turbulent World: How Nature Mixes Things Up” at a Frontiers in Science Public Lecture Series, beginning Monday (May 21).

May 16 — The Los Alamos Bomb Squad will host a Robot Rodeo on May 21-25, 2007 at Technical Area 49.

Mortandad Trail Open to Public Friday and Saturday
May 15 — In conjunction with New Mexico Heritage Preservation Month, the Los Alamos National Laboratory Cultural Resources Team is hosting public self-guided tours of the Mortandad Cavate Trail on Friday and Saturday.

May 9 — Los Alamos National Laboratory employees for the seventh consecutive year are the largest contributors to the United Way of Santa Fe County's annual giving campaign.

Girls learn about careers in math and science
March 8 — More than 100 girls from throughout Northern New Mexico can learn about careers in math and science at the annual Expanding Your Horizons conference on March 14 in Los Alamos.

New program a matchmaker for Laboratory volunteers
February 15 — Finding a place to volunteer in 2007 just got easier. As part of Los Alamos National Laboratory's commitment to increase its outreach to nearby communities, the Laboratory has joined VolunteerMatch, a network of nonprofit organizations that match people who want to volunteer with organizations that need them.

Mathematical code for inverses wins top prize for Manzano High student team at Los Alamos Supercomputing Challenge
April 25 — A pair of budding mathematicians from Albuquerque Manzano High School who wrote mathematical codes typical of those used in cryptography and mathematical error correction captured the top prize in the New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge.

January 18 — Los Alamos National Laboratory today announced the completion of a yearlong effort to assist Cochiti Pueblo in attaining 8(a) business development status with the federal Small Business Administration (SBA).

October 17 — Light-wave energy in the same spectrum of energy found in home appliances may soon be used in a new generation of weapons. On Thursday (Oct. 20), Los Alamos National Laboratory's Associate Director for Threat Reduction, Douglas Beason, will talk about America's new directed energy weapons in a talk at the Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum.

Los Alamos scientist to speak on gamma ray bursts
September 2 — A few times a day a special type of massive star transforms itself into a black hole, simultaneously collapsing and ejecting material in a jet that moves very close to the speed of light. During their fleeting existence, these jets flood much of the universe with an enormous burst of gamma rays.

Learning from small earthquakes focus of talk August 18 at Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum
August 12 — The study of earthquakes and seismology is the subject of a talk Aug. 18 by University of California, Berkeley lecturer Margaret Hellweg. The talk is at noon in the Bradbury Science Museum downtown and is free and open to the public.

July 22 — A public presentation about snakes will be held at Los Alamos National Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday (July 26) and again on Aug. 4.

Forest health specialist talks on "What's bugging the Forest" June 9 at Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum
June 6 — Stephani Sandoval, a forest health specialist with the New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Services, will talk about the condition of area forests, bark beetles and other forest-related topics at a talk at noon, Thursday (June 9) in the Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum downtown.

Laboratory employees again are top contributors to Santa Fe County 2004 United Way campaign
May 13 — Los Alamos National Laboratory employees for the fifth consecutive year are the largest contributors to the United Way of Santa Fe County's annual giving campaign. Laboratory employees pledged or donated $113,242 to the United Way of Santa Fe County's 2004 giving campaign.

Northern New Mexico girls learn about math, science through Expanding Your Horizons program
March 18 — An estimated 200 teenage girls from around Northern and Central New Mexico will discover the wonderment of math and science as participants in the national Expanding Your Horizons program Thursday, March 31, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Parish Hall in Los Alamos.

Bradbury Science Museum celebrates Women's History Month with talks, exhibit
March 4 — Los Alamos National Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum is celebrating Women's History Month with a talk Tuesday (March 8) by a Manhattan Project chemist and a new traveling exhibit. Other activities in March are planned as well.

Carter Hydrick returns to the Bradbury Science Museum Feb. 15
February 7 — Back by popular demand, Carter Hydrick, author of Critical Mass: How Nazi Germany Surrendered Enriched Uranium For The United States' Atomic Bomb, will speak about his book at Los Alamos' Bradbury Science Museum at 7 p.m., Tuesday (Feb. 15).

Skill of search dogs focus of Jan. 19 talk at Bradbury Science Museum
January 14 — Explosives, airport security and natural disasters are all familiar words that bring home the reality of the world today. Dogs are increasingly used to effectively assist law enforcement and national security in ferreting out information that might otherwise be hard to obtain.

Is he here yet? Lab scientists keep tabs on Santa
December 22 — Los Alamos National Laboratory's Space Data Systems group is keeping an eye out for the jolly old man in the red suit, Santa Claus. Beginning at 6 a.m., Thursday, (Dec. 24), Los Alamos scientists will track Santa on his whirlwind travels around the world, and give hourly updates via its Web site at http://santa.lanl.gov online on Santa's progress toward Northern New Mexico.

December 20 — Los Alamos National Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum will be open from 1 to 5 p.m., Dec. 28-30. The Laboratory is on holiday closure the week of Dec. 27.

Author discusses Nazi Germany role in U.S. atomic bomb talk
November 5 — Carter Hydrick, author of "Critical Mass: How Nazi Germany Surrendered Enriched Uranium for the United States' Atomic Bomb," will speak at Los Alamos' Bradbury Science Museum at 7 p.m., Tuesday (Nov. 9). A book-signing at Otowi Station Bookstore next door will immediately follow.

Laboratory sponsored Math and Science Academy a success
July 8 — The quality of education in Northern New Mexico has been improved because of the Northern New Mexico Math and Science Academy (MSA), according to a study by evaluators from the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing at the University of California at Los Angeles. The MSA is a Laboratory collaboration with the Northern New Mexico Council for Excellence in Education (NMCEE).

November 3 — Continuing its all-star annual series of robot-building workshops, scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory will bring the cold, hard, hand of science to bear in the classroom this week. Armed with a box of robot kits and a cumulative 100-plus years of professional experience, Los Alamos scientists will do a show-and-tell that should turn some heads at Jemez Valley Elementary School, Jemez Valley Middle School, San Diego Riverside School, Walatowa High and Jemez Valley High School.

December 20 — With a little help from Los Alamos National Laboratory's Nonproliferation and International Security Division, children of all ages can track Santa Claus' trek from the North Pole around the world on Christmas Eve.

Los Alamos to offer small business technology subcontracts; conference set for March 7
March 3 — A Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory conference next week will help Northern New Mexico high-tech small businesses apply for technology maturation and commercialization subcontracts. The conference, sponsored by the Industrial Business Development's Technology Commercialization Office, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Los Alamos Inn.

Lab cancels planned biodetector tests
July 8 — Planned tests involving the outdoor release of a common bacterium have been cancelled due to ongoing public concerns, Los Alamos National Laboratory officials announced today. The tests are part of a program to develop better devices for prompt, accurate detection of biological agents that could be used in terrorist or battlefield attacks. Scientists will look for alternate sites to conduct airborne releases of bacteria as part of the detector development.

April 5 — Middle and high school students from throughout New Mexico are invited to participate in the 5th Annual BEAM robotics workshop on April 8-10 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center, next to the Mesa Public Library in Los Alamos.

Lab's nonproliferation and international security division awards thousands in scholarships to its students
September 3 — Los Alamos National Laboratory's Nonproliferation and International Security Division recently awarded $53,000 in scholarships to students from universities in New Mexico and other states nationwide.

August 7 — Nearly two dozen teachers will blast off the new school year this fall using a curriculum they developed with the help of space scientists from the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory.

May 16 — ScientificAmerican.com, part of Scientific American Magazine, has named a chemistry Web site at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory one of the top 50 best Web resources in science and technology.

Lab will hold bioscience information session in Santa Fe
April 6 — The Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory will hold a public poster session highlighting its research in biothreat reduction Tuesday at Santa Fe Community College. Scientists will be available to answer questions about their posters and research at the session, scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m.

Lab's Institutional Biosafety Committee to meet
April 2 — Los Alamos National Laboratory's Institutional Biosafety Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The meeting, which is open to the public, will take place in the auditorium of the Health Research Laboratory, located next to Los Alamos Medical Center.
