Mission
The Clean Water Act of 1987 requires that operators of facilities that discharge storm water associated with certain activities obtain National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits to control the quality of storm water discharges. Responsibility for issuing and enforcing discharge permits has been delegated from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to the Rhode Island Department of the Environmental Management (RIDEM). Naval Station Newport is currently discharging storm water under the RIDEM General Permit for Industrial Activities (Permit Number RIR800126). Naval Station Newport’s storm drain system discharges to Narragansett Bay.
