Bird Walks

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Pacific Region has assembled a list of 100 “knock your socks off” bird walks in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Hawaii. Follow the Pacific Region’s  Facebook page and search for #100BirdWalks to see posts with more information highlighting these walks. We encourage you to take a walk and tell us what you see using the hashtag #iBirdBecause. 8. Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area
Birding trail: Interlakes Trail
Best time to visit for birding: November -May, August – September (mid)
Bird Species you are likely to see: In winter, along with sparrows including Lincoln’s and White-throated Sparrows, expect to see many geese and ducks, notably Canvasback, Redhead, and Common Goldeneye to name a few. Hundreds of migrant shorebirds, Great Egrets and American White Pelicans show up as water levels drop in the late summer exposing fish and mud flats. Spring and summer brings songbirds to the forest. Bald Eagles nest on site. Check the side slough off the Interlakes Trail to see wood ducks and Western Painted Turtle (one of the largest remaining populations of Western Painted Turtles in Oregon).

13. Sandy River Delta
Birding trail: Sandy River Delta Trail system
Best time to visit for birding: June (mid) – July (mid)
Bird Species you are likely to see: breeding migratory songbirds including some more typical of the east side like Eastern Kingbird, Yellow-breasted Chat, and Red-eyed Vireos.  Birds will be on territories and in full song thus easy to find.  Many western riparian and edge species can be seen here such as Willow Flycatcher, Lazuli Bunting, American Goldfinch and Swainson's Thrush. Keep your ears out for calling Yellow-billed Cuckoos starting in about July.  This rare and declining long distance migrant has been detected here in recent years.

Many of the extremely rare shorebirds seen in the Klamath Basin (i.e. Whimbrel, Ruddy Turnstone, Red Knot, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Sanderling, Upland Sandpiper, Hudsonian Godwit, Stilt Sandpiper and Ruff) have been seen on the White Lake Unit of Lower Klamath Refuge.

15. McNary Wildlife Nature Area
Birding trail: Trail system around several ponds and marshes and along the Columbia River
Best time to visit for birding: November to March (mid)
Bird Species you are likely to see: High diversity of waterfowl species. Many wintering waterfowl, waterbirds, and song birds can be found in the ponds when not iced over and on the nearby Columbia River. Songbirds such as wintering sparrows, kinglets and chickadees and potentially both species of waxwing can be found in the shrubs and trees around the ponds. Search the trees and shrubs on the islands to find roosting black-crowned night-herons. In early 2015, a rare black-headed gull spent time roosting with the large flock of wintering gulls.

16. Yaquina Bay
Birding trail: Short trail from Hatfield Marine Science Center to the Oregon Coast Aquarium provides easy views of the bay. Trail around the LNG tank off Yaquina Bay Rd also provides easy access to the bay. Best time to visit for birding: November (end) to March (early)
Bird Species you are likely to see: Yaquina Bay can be an excellent place to view Brant, seaducks and waterbirds such as loons and grebes in close proximity. The incredibly beautiful harlequin duck can usually be seen along the road to the south jetty near the small rock dikes. Long-tailed Ducks, both goldeneye species, scoters, and Red-breasted Mergansers can often be found in this outer bay area. Within the bay and along the Hatfield Marine Science Center trail one can see large flocks of American Wigeon and Northern Pintails with a mix of other ducks mixed in. It is not uncommon to find at least three species of loons and possibly four species of grebes all foraging throughout the bay.

18. Fernhill Wetlands
Birding trail: Trails start at parking area off SW Fern Hill Rd.  A scope is handy for viewing large ponds in the back.  Access to parking can be flooded during periods of heavy rainfall.
Best time to visit for birding: December - February
Bird Species you are likely to see: Large flocks of winter Cackling Geese and other waterfowl such as Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, Mallard, Canvasback and Tundra Swans.  Raptors, waterbirds and wintering songbirds are abundant and often less common wintering birds such as Northern Shrike, Black Phoebe and White-throated and Swamp Sparrows can be found.
