We do this by applying science and engineering to address challenges, bridging fundamental research through commercial manufacturing to meet the advanced materials needs of the future.

In the experiment, researchers first dip-coated a hydrophobic polymeric membrane in tannic acid (TA), a common polyphenol. Then, the dried TA dip-coated membrane is loaded into the atomic layer deposition (ALD) reactor for coating with titanium dioxide using the precursors titanium tetrachloride and water (TiCl4 and H2O). A simple pretreatment step enables membranes to be enhanced using atomic layer deposition, a technique that can improve performance and introduce new surface properties.
