Overview

This MDL project is to develop a comprehensive suite of decision assistance tools implemented in AWIPS which covers the full scope of hydro-meteorological phenomena and NWS forecaster responsibilities. Currently, this project includes the following four areas: AWIPS2 Boundary Drawing Tool, Forecaster Decision Support Environment (FDSE) Data Monitor (DM), Hazard Services - Probabilistic Hazard Information (PHI), and Tracking Meteogram.

Projects

  • AWIPS2 Boundary Drawing Tool

The primary functions of the tool are: allow the forecaster to enter meso-scale and/or synoptic scale surface boundaries, allow the forecaster to set a boundary in motion after its creation, allow the forecaster to adjust location, shape, and motion or delete any active boundary, and has the capability to save the data via AWIPS 2 localization APIs.

  • Forecaster Decision Support Environment (FDSE) Data Monitor (DM)

The Forecaster Decision Support Environment (FDSE) project explores new data management and processing capabilities to enhance situational awareness, allow forecasters to work more efficiently, and improve model ensemble capabilities in order to explore probabilistic forecast products. Efficiency improvements will allow forecasters to spend more time providing their customers Impact-based Decision Support Services.

  • Hazard Services - Probabilistic Hazard Information (PHI)

The primary goal of this project is to integrate into a single program the three applications that are currently used to generate the various hazardous weather watches, warnings, and advisories: 1) WarnGen, used to create shortfused severe weather warnings; 2) the Graphical Hazards Generator(GHG), used to generate long-fused hazardous weather warnings; 3) RiverPro, used for creating longer-term river flood warnings.

  • Tracking Meteogram

The Tracking Meteogram Tool in AWIPS will read the gridded data underlying a selected track at various time stamps. Specifically, the addition of this tool would allow for "on the fly" plotting of values from gridded model or diagnostics fields, satellite data, or radar data while following a feature in through time, providing a graphical meteogram.
