EHP Editors

The EHP Editor-in-Chief and Science Editors work with our Deputy Editors and Associate Editors to triage submissions and ensure rigorous and fair peer review. They also work with authors to ensure transparent, reproducible reporting of their approach and findings. As the front-line contact for the journal, our Peer Review Coordinator assists contributors with technical questions from submission to final decision and helps keep the peer-review process on track.

Our News Editor and International Outreach Manager, meanwhile, produce content that reaches a broader global audience. This includes nontechnical feature articles, summaries of scientific articles, and translated content.

This research integrates several disciplines, including epidemiology, inhalation toxicology, clinical medicine, and exposure sciences. Joel has served as principal investigator of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution, a prospective cohort study of the relationship between air pollutant exposures and the progression of cardiovascular disease over time. He has published more than 200 research articles and reviews.

In addition to his career in epidemiology and environmental health sciences, Joel is a practicing physician, board certified in internal medicine and occupational medicine. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and the American Heart Association.

Before coming to EHP, Windy worked in the National Toxicology Program (NTP) at NIEHS. Her most recent position at NTP was in the Office of Health Assessment and Translation. In this role, she led scientific literature analyses to evaluate the associations between a variety of environmental exposures and adverse health outcomes. Two projects included the health effects of electric lighting practices and chemical exposures linked with Parkinson’s disease.

Previously, she managed the NTP WormTox Screening Facility, which developed and conducted bioassays using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as an alternative model organism in high-throughput toxicological screening.

Windy is an active member of the Society of Toxicology (SOT) and current Secretary-Treasurer of the North Carolina Regional Chapter. She is also a member of the American Public Health Association and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

She received a PhD in environmental toxicology from the University of Georgia in Athens in 2002. In 2013, she earned an MPH in nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and became a board-certified Registered Dietitian Nutritionist in early 2014.

Jane came to EHP from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), where she taught epidemiologic methods and cancer epidemiology as an assistant professor of epidemiology in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. She also conducted research on environmental, dietary, genetic, and microbial risk factors for a variety of cancers. Jane is an active member of ISEE. She has been a regular presenter on writing and reviewing manuscripts for scholarly publication at ISEE annual meetings.

Before joining the UNC-CH faculty, Jane served as a research fellow in epidemiology for two years at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). She was awarded a PhD in epidemiology from UNC-CH in 1999 and an MPH in environmental and occupational health from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in 1994.
