Medical Officer, Health Systems and Interventions Research Branch

The Health Systems and Interventions Research Branch (HSIRB) within the Healthcare Delivery Research Program (HDRP) of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences is conducting a national search for a Medical Officer. The position is located in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Rockville, Maryland.

HSIRB supports a portfolio of extramural investigator-initiated grants and develops funding opportunities and research resources to support observational and intervention research on structural, organizational, social, and behavioral factors that affect care across the cancer continuum. The ultimate purpose of this research is to improve understanding of healthcare delivery that leads to improvement in cancer outcomes, reduces cancer-related health disparities, and reduces the burden of cancer on patients, delivery systems, and society.

Position Description

This position requires the successful candidate to have recent experience in cancer-related care and leading clinical operations; this experience is needed to advance an innovative program of research on multilevel factors that influence cancer care delivery. Of particular interest are clinicians, care teams, IT systems, other organizational aspects of healthcare delivery, care delivery models, and interplay among these factors to improve care across the cancer continuum – from prevention and early detection through treatment, survivorship, and end of life.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide valuable input into other HDRP initiatives, including: Population-based Research to Optimize the Screening Process (PROSPR); NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) Cancer Care Delivery Research (CCDR); Improving the Management of symPtoms during And following Cancer Treatment (IMPACT); and Accelerating Colorectal Cancer Screening and Follow-Up Through Implementation Science (ACCSIS).

The successful candidate will monitor data sources to study the context of cancer care delivery, identify approaches to increase embedded research, and develop new resources and initiatives as appropriate. Duties also include managing grants and contracts and providing content expertise to inform development of funding announcements.

Qualifications

Candidates for the position must have an MD or equivalent degree; clinical and administrative leadership experience in cancer-related care in the past five years; a record of peer-reviewed publications in one or more of: health policy and management, organizational behavior, or related fields. The candidate must be able to work well and independently across transdisciplinary groups and organizations. Candidates are strongly encouraged to apply if they understand influences of workflow, capacity, and logistics on care delivery; have interest in the intersection of health services, policy research, and learning systems; and know the business considerations that influence care delivery and patient outcomes.
