Current Research
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s ITS research focuses on several high-priority areas including Emerging and Enabling Technologies, Data Access and Exchanges, Cybersecurity for ITS, Automation, Complete Trip – ITS4US, and Accelerating ITS Deployment. The ITS Strategic Plan includes in-depth discussion of the ITS Program’s strategic goals, these research areas, and four technology transfer programs.

About the Research Area
The U.S. DOT recognizes the need to advance the adoption and use of emerging practices and technologies for transportation—particularly where they play a key role in providing public benefit to Americans. The ITS JPO will coordinate and conduct investigations and exploratory research into emerging technologies across government, academia, and the private sector. This research will provide the U.S. DOT with a significant understanding of the potential benefits and disruptions these technologies could represent to the transportation system.
Planned Activities
- Identify research needs and opportunities by exploring federal, state, local, private, and academic research on technologies
- Research and test communications technologies to support transportation connectivity, enabling cooperative ITS and connected and automated transportation
- Investigate future spectrum use models that support transportation safety and system efficiency
- Develop new institutional models to help accelerate adoption of technology innovations
- Transfer technologies from exploratory research to development and deployment when appropriate

The ITS JPO is identifying and assessing the potential of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, cellular-vehicle-to-everything communications, 5G communication networks, passenger drones, Hyperloop, and more, for adoption or adaptation to the transportation system.
- What is the ITS JPO’s role in pursuing emerging and enabling technologies?
As emerging technologies offer the potential to enter the transportation environment, the ITS JPO will evaluate their fit in meeting transportation needs and work with agency modes to extend resulting benefits from these technologies across the transportation system.
