The Spark Makerspace is a hands on learning lab for the UNT community with a mission to ignite the imagination, increase digital fluency, inspire explorative learning, support resume building, encourage personal growth & development of a maker mindset. The Spark makerspace is a service from the UNT Library and has two locations one in Willis Library room 135 and one at Discovery Park M130. As a unique combination of a hands-on learning lab and a library circulating collection, The Spark promotes the cooperative and creative use of technology to support the continual development of digital fluency for UNT students, faculty and staff. The makerspace provides the UNT community including faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students with access to equipment, software, and trainings. The Spark will host numerous workshops each long semester. Due to the current health concerns all workshops are currently being offered online.

You can follow what is happening in the makerspace on our Blog and through our Podcast UNT MindSpark

The Spark offers assistance with learning how to use resources but we are not authorized to develop code or projects for individuals. We are here to help you and offer the following types of support.

  •  Spark Resources Consultation
    • A consultation is a 30-60 minute session with a Knowledge Specialist. In this session, you are expected to present the project concept/question so the Knowledge Specialist can highlight resources and offer suggestions to assist you in accomplishing your project goal.
  • Training Sessions
    • Training is a 60-minute session with a Knowledge Specialist that will train you on safety standards, proper use of equipment/software, and Spark use guidelines. Some equipment*/software may take more than one session. *You will sign a contract after your training session for future use on The Spark’s equipment.
  • Machine Operator Appointment (Required for CNC, EinScan, Embroidery, Laser)
    • Do you have everything ready to complete your project? You should have a file created in the proper format, approved materials, and now you will need to schedule an appointment session with a Machine Operator to complete the cut/scan. Machine Operator's set up the machine and insure the machines is operating properly. Project planning and design are done through consultations and trainings respectively.
  • Submit STL Files (3D Printing)
    • The Spark’s 3D printing is a paid service handled through 3D Printing by The Spark.

Our maker-techs come from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise. You can easily identify them from their grey vests, and they will always be happy to help you.
