Environmental Literacy and Workforce Development

Sea Grant works to create a diverse workforce trained in marine science, technology, engineering, mathematics, law and policy. Training programs and education materials help build an environmentally literate workforce that understands and utilizes best available science to make informed decisions.

Christopher Petrone

Marine Education Specialist, Delaware Sea Grant - Christopher works with students and teachers at all levels. His education programs span the topics of marine science, environmental science, renewable energy and climate change. 

"Teachers are getting different experiences and perspectives on the science we are doing in the state that they can then take back into the classroom."

Mark Wiley

Assistant Director for Marine Education, New Hampshire Sea Grant - Mark coordinates N.H. Sea Grant's marine education efforts and is also the director of the University of New Hampshire's marine docent program.

"I do the training of the new docents and really start them on that path...it's then other docents that provide them with the kind of experiences, wisdom and tips that make them really effective educators."

Paul Focazio

Director of Communications, New York Sea Grant - Paul oversees the development and production of New York Sea Grant publications and products, writes and edits NYSG's e-newsletters, sends press releases to media, and supervises Web development activities.

"Making science accessible and people aware of what we do and the importance of project findings and subsequent impacts is vital for the longevity and relevance of the program."

USC Sea Grant has worked with communities in southern California for over six years on climate adaptation planning. They analyzed their efforts and published the analysis in the Cities and the Environment Journal.
