Williams Hit Two Home Runs In 10-5 Victory

Reno, Nev. (3/31/06) Jonna Williams hit two home runs to lead the North Texas softball team to a 10-5 win against St. Mary’s College on Friday afternoon in the first day of the University of the Nevada Tournament. The Mean Green lost to Portland State, 11-3, in the first game of the day.

 

North Texas extends its record to 13-17 and won its first game in the series against St. Mary’s College.

 

Williams went 3-for-4 with four RBI after hitting two two-run homers in the win. She also posted one of NT’s two hits in the loss to Portland State.

 

As a team, North Texas recorded 13 hits in the win. St. Mary’s managed 12 hits but was only able to score five runs. NT scored a combined five runs in the first three innings and sealed the win with four runs in the sixth.

 

Sophomore Kristina Fowler won her 11th game, tying her total from last year. She was able to pitch out of jams and was helped by big innings from her team. She also helped out offensively with two hits.

 

The bottom of the lineup for the Mean Green exploded in the second game. The last three batters in the lineup combined for seven hits, including three by Williams. Freshmen Sarah Jones and Kadie Platt each posted multi-hit games for the Mean Green. At the sixth hole, junior Monica Garcia chipped in with her second home run of the season.

 

The Mean Green was outhit, 12-2, in the loss to Portland State. The Vikings used a seven-run third inning to take the run-rule game.

 

Sophomore Taylor Johnston used her one at-bat to hit her first career home run in the fifth inning against PSU. Williams used a double to knock in the third run for the Mean Green.

 

North Texas returns to action with two more games in the University of Nevada Tournament in Saturday in Reno.
