Pena Paces UNT On Day One Of Inaugural Bruzzy At Maridoe

April 2, 2018

Carrollton -- Junior Sabina Pena had a top 10 individual finish on day one of the inaugural Bruzzy at Maridoe, hosted by North Texas, to lead the way for the Mean Green, finishing her first day of action six-over par.

North Texas as a team sits in 12th place at 47-over-par for the day. The tournament is the first to be hosted by a North Texas program at the challenging Maridoe Golf Course, and the event leaders, Texas A&M shot a score of 15-over.

"The tournament is going well from a logistics standpoint," head coach Michael Akers said. "The participants and coaches are very happy with the way they have been treated. As for our team, Sabina started off round one with a great round of 72. Unfortunately we couldn't put anything else together. Sol and Lauren really grinded during round two to save us shots. We want to grind during the final round and move into the top 10."

Pena built off her season-best performance last week in Tucson, Arizona, at the Mountain View Collegiate, by tying the season-high single round score of 72 in the first round on Monday.

In Monday's cold and damp weather, Pena birdied four holes in the first round to finish with a card of 72. In the second round on Monday, Pena shot a par on 13 holes to score a 78 and lead her to her tenth-place finish in the two-day tournament that features six schools ranked in the top 50.

The third round tees off with a shotgun start Tuesday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT from the Maridoe Golf Club.
