UMKC Game Notes 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Unable to find its first win of the season through six games in the state of Texas, North Texas women's basketball looks to get off the schneid when the team travels to Kansas City to face UMKC. The matinee matchup will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday December 14 at the Swinney Recreation Center.

Historically, it looks like the Mean Green is in good shape, as they are 5-0 in the all-time series against the Kangaroos. But as North Texas has found out numerous times so far this year, nothing can be taken for granted on the court, as the team has lost five of its six games by 10 points or fewer.

"Last year's game has very little to do with this year's game," head coach Mike Petersen said bluntly. "It's being played in a different place with two very different teams, personnel-wise. I don't think series histories are as important as, 'What's this year's team doing right now?'

"Of course," he continued, "I hope it gets to 6-0."

The last time out, the Mean Green lost to Oklahoma by a score of 68-39 after falling behind 40-16 at halftime, primarily due to 23 turnovers on the offensive end. After the break, however, North Texas was able to hang with the Sooners and ended up holding the Power 5 opponent 19 points under its season scoring average. The Mean Green finished with 37 turnovers for the game, yet still forced 31 on the defensive end, a season-high mark.

"The Oklahoma game was kind of an outlier because we turned the ball over so much; we haven't been doing that," Petersen evaluated. "It's gonna come down to us making shots, because you know we're gonna guard and you know we're gonna play hard."

Senior forward Briesha Wynn hopes to bounce back after the first zero-point performance of her North Texas career in the loss to Oklahoma. Wynn played only 11 minutes due to foul trouble and went 0-3 from the floor with four turnovers and two rebounds. Senior guard BreAnna Dawkins, who has led the Mean Green in assists in five out of the first six games, led the team in scoring with nine points against the Sooners.

Tip off at the Swinney Recreation Center will begin North Texas' first road swing of the season. Following the game in Kansas City, the Mean Green take off to San Francisco to play the Dons Wednesday December 17 at 9 p.m.
