Students who enroll in the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas for the 2019 fall semester will have the option of combining study in the sciences with study in the arts. The academy, known as TAMS, will offer three new curricular tracks in music, media arts and visual arts and design, adding to its existing curricular tracks of science and computer science and engineering.

The Regeneron Science Talent Search is one of the nation's most prestigious pre-college science competitions. The TAMS students are among 18 students from Texas, and 300 students in the U.S., chosen as semifinalists from more than 1,800 students who entered their original research projects in the competition.

The Siemens Competition is one of the nation's premier research competitions for high school-aged students, promoting excellence in math, science and technology. Students may enter either individual or team research projects. The top prize for both individuals and teams is $100,000.

The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science's Early Summer Research Programs brings students who have just been accepted to the academy to the University of North Texas campus the summer before they begin classes at UNT, to do research with faculty mentors.

Sponsored by the UNT Honors College, but open to all UNT students who are earning bachelor's degrees, Scholars Day gives students a chance to present their research in the same way that faculty members and other professionals present at conferences, either through display of research posters or by giving oral research paper presentations.

Prateek Kalakuntla, from Plano, was the sixth Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science student selected for the national finals of the annual Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. He received fourth place for synthesizing a substance to detect mercury and other toxins in water.
