Vocal Pedagogy

Vocal Pedagogy

DMA students who specialize in voice must demonstrate proficiency in voice pedagogy by passing the graduate entrance exams administered during new student orientation, or by taking MUAG 5300 (Science and Pedagogy of the Singing Voice).

The decision to earn a DMA in vocal performance is indicative of a desire to teach voice at the college or university level. Familiarity with basic principles of anatomy, physiology and acoustics of the singing voice are expected in the professional marketplace. Knowledge of pedagogical principles derived from the vast literature on the subject is expected prior to advanced study in order to achieve the level of sophistication necessary for professional work as a teacher. Vocal pedagogy will be covered on the qualifying exams at the end of the course work.
