BOSE New Activities

Supporting English Learners in STEM Subjects

This new study will explore both the research evidence and successful programs or interventions both within the United States and abroad in order to identify promising practices for supporting ELs in STEM. It will also consider the needs of STEM teachers with respect to instruction and assessment of ELs.

Graduate Training in the Social and Behavioral Sciences: A Public Workshop

BOSE will conduct a 2-day workshop to help identify educational changes that may be needed in order to better prepare Ph.D. students in the social and behavioral sciences for the job market and scientific challenges of the future.

Service-Learning in Undergraduate Geosciences

geosciencesThis publication from BOSE summarizes a workshop held in April 2016 that explored the current and potential role of service-learning in undergraduate geosciences education. “Service-learning” generally refers to projects planned as components of academic coursework in which students use knowledge and skills taught in the course to address real needs in their communities. This kind of learning experience, which allows students to focus on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility, has become an increasingly popular component of undergraduate science education.

Science Literacy
Concepts, Contexts, and Consequences

Science LiteracyThis report considers how the definition of science literacy has expanded and shifted over time in order to accommodate changing ideas about science. The report also presents a research agenda with questions about creating new measures of science literacy and expanding the information available to clarify the relationship between science knowledge and attitudes toward science, how science literacy is used and measured in different contexts', the relationship of science literacy to other literacy skills, and the role of science literacy for citizens as decision-makers.
