Jail Public Information Officers’ Network Overview

The public’s perception/misperception of jail operations can influence public safety, funding, elections and numerous other factors. Responding to media inquiries regarding crisis situations is just one of the many roles of the PIO. Building a positive rapport with the media, taking control of your message, and conveying your mission are priority tasks for a PIO.

Public Information Officers (PIO) play a vital role in local jails. The public’s perception/misperception of jail operations can influence public safety, funding, elections and numerous other factors. Responding to media inquiries regarding crisis situations is just one of the many roles of the PIO. Building a positive rapport with the media, taking control of your message, and conveying your mission are priority tasks for a PIO.
The Jail Public Information Officers Network Meeting provides for the free exchange of ideas and information that allows colleagues to share and learn new strategies.
-Objectives: Participants attending this network meeting will:
-Gain support, confidence and competence to effectively represent their agencies in information dissemination, media relations and public affairs.
-Discuss lessons learned from critical incidents.
-Share proactive strategies and techniques to effectively engage your community and work with the media.
-Identify contemporary, innovative and creative methods, as well as leverage data, to advance/promote the mission, vision and values of the jail.
-Identify relevant and emergent issues/topics surrounding media relations and public affairs.
-Discuss the constraints that inhibit the dissemination of information with internal and external stakeholders.
-Discuss the importance of participating in PIO associations and other network organizations.
Participants:
Staff working in jails (large, medium and small, including military and Indian Country jails) who are designated with the public information function of the agency.
