Overview

This training consists of two recently developed programs by the National Institute of Corrections’ Jails Division:

• Making Direct Supervision Work: The Role of the Housing-Unit Officer

• Making Direct Supervision Work: The Role of the First-Line Supervisor

The programs are designed for agencies planning to move from a traditional jail into a new direct supervision jail. However, they also can be used to train new and veteran staff in direct supervision jails currently operating under the direct supervision philosophy.

For agencies opening a new direct supervision jail, NIC conducts the programs at those agencies through technical assistance. For operating direct supervision jails, NIC conducts this training-for-trainers (T4T) program. The direct supervision T4T program is by invitation only.

Invited agencies must commit to send a team of four staff consisting of the following:

• 1 staff at a command level with decision making authority related to implementing direct supervision
• 3 trainers who are experienced, competent classroom trainers. The trainers should include those at both the line and supervisory level.

All participants must understand and support direct supervision.

Why should the jail commander attend?

The administration’s understanding of and support for the concepts taught are critical to successful implementation.

The commander’s attendance actively demonstrates to staff the administration’s support for direct supervision.

This is an excellent opportunity for the commander to receive a refresher on direct supervision and experience the latest curricula designed for line officers and supervisors.

Assurance: Please note that by applying for this program, you acknowledge that (1) you meet the eligibility requirements for the training, and (2) that your supervisor supports your application for, and attendance at, this training, if selected.
