This unusual jellyfish was seen during the 2015 Hohonu Moana: Exploring Deep Waters off Hawaii expedition, on a dive at Deep Twin Ridge within the Johnston Atoll region. On December 7, 2016, the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, at the conclusion of the ROV shakedown cruise, the team on the Okeanos explored this Japanese mini submarine, five miles off the entrance to Pearl Harbor. The sub was sunk on the morning of December 7, 1941, 90 minutes before Pearl Harbor was bombed by air. These snails were seen on a hydrothermal vent field at Chammoro Seamount that was discovered during the Okeanos Explorer 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas expedition. Check out the new OER Video Portal – a self-service web portal allowing anyone to access video segments and highlights recorded onboard NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer during expeditions conducted from 2010 through 2016. Between December 1 - 16, the Okeanos team will conduct two at-sea shakedown cruises, testing all of the ship’s mission systems to ensure everything is performing properly and that the ship is fully ready for the 2017 field season and will collect the highest-quality data possible.
