On May 12, 2016, the Security Executive Agent signed the Security Executive Agent Directive (SEAD) 5, “Collection, Use, and Retention of Publicly Available Social Media Information in Personnel Security Background Investigations and Adjudications.” SEAD 5 “addresses the collection and use of publicly available social media information during the conduct of personnel security background investigations and adjudications for determining initial and continue eligibility for access to classified national security information or eligibility to hold a sensitive positions and the retention of such information.”

The Department of Energy and its facilities dominated the recent 2016 EPEAT Purchaser Awards ceremony held in Washington DC. Of the thirty eight award winners, fifteen were DOE labs, sites, and facilities.

A “Zika Virus Disease and Prevention” presentation was made by Bonnie S. Richter, MPH, PhD, at the May 19 Office of Environment, Health, Safety and Security (EHSS) All Hands Meeting.

The Office of Worker Safety and Health Policy (AU-11), is coordinating Local-area (GTN) safety and health training: Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) and Radiological Worker II training with the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) Training and Education Fund.

On May 9, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized 24 Safer Choice Partner of the Year award winners from across 12 states, the District of Columbia and Canada for outstanding achievement in the design, manufacture, promotion and use of a range of cleaning and other household products that carry the Safer Choice label. DOE was recognized as part of the Federal Sustainable Acquisitions and Materials Management Practices (SAMM) Working Group under the Program Supporter category.

Executive Order 13693, "Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade," directs agencies to identify and address projected impacts of climate change on mission critical water, energy, communication and transportation demands and to consider those impacts in operational preparedness planning.

On June 6-9, the Office of Worker Safety and Health Policy will provide OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety outreach training to 30 individuals at Hanford.

DOE Technical Standards Policy & Procedures (TSPP) tutorial Modules Available

The Office of Environmental Health, Safety, and Security will sponsor the 2016 Nuclear and Facility Safety Program Workshop which will be held May 2-6, 2016 at the Alexis Park in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The purpose of the training is to provide an enhanced understanding of the requirements of OSHA general industry standards pursuant to DOE adoption of OSHA standards under 10 CFR 851 and DOE O 440.1B.

The Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Health and Safety, provides OSHA 30-hour General Industry outreach training to DOE workers.

Secretary Moniz and Deputy Secretary Sherwood-Randall signed their Personal Commitment to Excellence in Health and Safety. The memorandum was used to develop a poster that is being displayed throughout DOE facilities in Forrestal and Germantown.

The purpose of the Call for Proposals is to identify potential projects addressing cross-cutting nuclear safety issues across the DOE complex.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), along with DOE and NNSA, were recognized as "Climate Champions" by the White House GreenGov Awards program, for the project, "Climate Realities at LANL." The award recognizes LANL, DOE, and NNSA for identifying significant climate-change related impacts at and around LANL and taking steps to integrate the reality of climate change into the Lab's operational and planning processes.

On October 14 & 15, Dr. McArthur presented the lecture entitled "Engineered Nanoparticles - The Department of Energy’s Regulatory Approach” at both the Northwest Occupational Health Conference in Bremerton, Washington and the University of Washington in Seattle.
