How do I apply for a job at NREL?

Can I apply for multiple positions?

Yes, apply for any and all positions that you are qualified for and have interest in. Remember, you must meet the basic qualifications and you must submit separate applications through our online recruitment tool for each position.

What are the software requirements for applying for a job?

NREL's online recruitment tool supports multiple Internet browsers. However, if you experience technical issues while applying for a position, please try using a different browser to submit your application.

What are the citizenship requirements for employment at NREL?

What is a limited-term position?

A limited-term position is a short-term position that may be extended based upon the needs of the lab. Limited-term employees, with an initial assignment of 12 months or longer, are eligible for: Paid Time Off, Extended Sick Leave, Short-term Disability, Medical/Dental Insurance, 403(b) Savings Plan matching, and Pension benefits based upon all other eligibility rules. Positions with initial assignments of 12 months or longer may also be eligible for relocation benefits.

Will I hear any follow up on my application?

We receive a large volume of resumes for each position and the review process takes time. If your application is selected after the initial screening, we will contact you for a phone interview.

Can I call about a specific job posting?

We receive a high volume of calls so one-on-one conversations with candidates are usually not possible. We encourage you to view our calendar of recruiting events. If there isn't an upcoming event in your area, feel free to connect with one of our recruiters on LinkedIn, or speak with NREL representatives at upcoming conferences.

How long does the hiring process take?

As a federal contractor, we must follow a very consistent and thorough hiring process. Though every position is different, typically it takes about two months to fill a position.

What should I expect in the interview process?

After candidate resumes are reviewed, selected candidates move to the phone screening/interview process with a recruiter or hiring manager. This screening process confirms that applicants meet the basic job qualifications. After the phone screening, you may be invited to an official interview for the open position. Candidates can expect either an on-site or video interview that will include a one-on-one interview, a panel interview, and/or a candidate presentation.

Does NREL have pre-employment requirements?

Yes. All candidates who are offered a position at NREL must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening and background check prior to their first day of employment. NREL covers the cost of the screening and background check.

Does NREL provide relocation assistance?

Depending on the position, relocation assistance may be available.

Are NREL employees considered federal employees?

No, we are a government contractor. Our current contract is managed by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.
