Notes: EIA tracking shown here because it has a longer time frame and separates exports. However, the EPA has also started tracking biodiesel consumption as part of their Renewable Fuel Standard program.
This chart shows trends in U.S. biodiesel production, exports, and consumption from 2001 to 2015. Exports of biodiesel peaked in 2008 largely due to an unintended effect of a biodiesel tax credit in the European Union. Exports then dropped after the effect was eliminated. The increased production and consumption from 2010 onward was largely to meet the Renewable Fuel Standard. Since 2013, production and consumption levels have for the most part held steady. The net export of biodiesel changed from positive to negative in 2013, meaning the quantity of biodiesel imported by the U.S. exceeded quantity exported. The positive growth of net exports since 2013 is likely due to the continued effort of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and expanding regulations.
