The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provided $4.5 billion to the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability to modernize the U.S. power grid, create jobs, and stimulate the economy. As part of that work, OE and industry partners invested a total of about $358 million to deploy synchrophasor technology to provide operators with unprecedented wide-area visibility to better sense the behavior of the transmission system and improve reliability. As a result of this investment, operators now have near 100% visibility of the behavior of the entire U.S. high-voltage transmission network, due in large part to synchrophasor deployments by the Recovery Act-funded projects. The “Advancement of Synchrophasor Technology in Projects Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009” report provides a wealth of information on those projects’ experiences, lessons learned, and procedures that were developed in order to advance the capabilities and facilitate further deployments of this important technology.
