Discard Methodology Review

In 2010, we developed a new methodology to estimate discards based on observer information. We are doing an evaluation of the methodology to consider modifications based on concerns raised by fishermen, stakeholders, and our staff.

The Center for Independent Experts (CIE) has obtained the services of two scientists who will conduct an independent peer review. We are pleased to announce the reviewers will be:

  • Review of the current cumulative method
  • Discussion of pros and cons of the current cumulative method
  • Review of the modeling techniques developed to simulate in-season behavior with archived data
  • Summary of the variability of the current in-season discard estimation and discussion of alternative applications of the cumulative method for several fisheries

  • The peer reviewers will begin to develop their findings, and will have an opportunity for further discussion of specific points with the analysts.
