Forecast Discussion: Christmas Eve, light northwesterly winds during the afternoon will aid pollutant dispersion in the Sacramento region. In addition, an upper-level trough of low pressure over northern California will enhance atmospheric mixing. However, calm winds in the morning and evening will limit dispersion, allowing pollutants to accumulate. Therefore, particle levels will be high-Moderate. Christmas Day, light southeasterly winds will limit dispersion and gradually transport additional pollutants into the Sacramento area. Furthermore, a strong overnight temperature inversion will reduce atmospheric mixing, trapping pollutants near the ground. These conditions will lead to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups particle levels. Monday, an upper-level ridge of high pressure will reduce vertical mixing in the atmosphere. In addition, morning and evening temperatures inversions will further limit mixing, trapping pollutants at the surface. These conditions, combined with light northerly winds limiting pollutant dispersion, will lead to high-Moderate particle levels. |
