Greetings!
The Secretary of the Navy is continuing focus on innovation within the Department of the Navy, and likewise, CHIPS continues to explore the many facets of innovation in the July-September edition as well.
DON innovation encompasses a wide range of areas ripe for improvement, from business IT, to training and education, streamlining administrative processes, to wargaming and warfighting, Secretary Ray Mabus has said.
SECNAV wrote that the DON “must anticipate, adapt, and thrive in a rapidly changing environment, which requires freedom, the flexibility to innovate at all levels, and the ability to flatten the organization, break-down silos, and create cross-disciplinary synergies… The mission and structure [of the department] are unique, but we can learn from other innovative organizations in order to cultivate the organizational characteristics and culture which will provide the foundation for an innovative DON.”
SECNAV has established a dedicated innovation website for sharing news and ideas, please visit the links below and join the discussion.

The DON welcomed a new Chief Information Officer onboard in June. Mr. Rob Foster has more than 30 years of leadership service to the United States, both as a civilian leader and as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy.
In July, the CHIPS staff had the pleasure of attending the promotion ceremony of Capt. Danelle Barrett to rear admiral. As you may recall, Rear Adm. Barrett has been a regular contributor to CHIPS since she was a lieutenant commander.
Finally, the Department of the Navy urges personnel to take action due to the Office of Personnel Management data breaches. Timely and accurate information and detailed FAQs will continue to be available on the SECNAV dedicated website: http://www.secnav.navy.mil/OPMBreachDON.
