Mean Green Falls To Ragin' Cajuns, 67-59

DENTON (2/2/06) The North Texas women’s basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped as Louisiana-Lafayette defeated the Mean Green, 67-59, on Thursday night in the Super Pit. The Mean Green and the Ragin’ Cajuns are now tied for first place in the West Division of the Sun Belt.

 

The Ragin’ Cajuns (15-6, 5-4) take the lead in the series, 10-9, and defeated North Texas (16-5, 5-4) at home for the first time in 22 years.

 

After North Texas held a brief 48-46 lead in the second half, Louisiana-Lafayette scored nine unanswered points to take permanent control of the game. North Texas cut the lead to four points, 58-54, after two free throws by Erica Howard but was unable to get any closer.

 

Mia Ajekwu and Erika Bobo led the team in scoring with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Ajekwu scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half.

 

Louisiana-Lafayette shot 38.1 percent from field-goal range and was 16-of-18 from the free throw line. The Mean Green held similar numbers from the field (37.1 percent) but struggled from the free throw line (55.6 percent). The Ragin’ Cajuns also held the edge in rebounds, 47 to 35.

 

Three players scored in double figures for Louisiana-Lafayette.  

 

The Mean Green led for most of the first half before the Ragin’ Cajuns scored the final basket to enter half ahead by two, 31-29.

 

North Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 when it faces New Orleans at 7 pm in the Super Pit.
