Frequently asked questions regarding AFSO 21 and the IDEA Cash program.

1. How do I submit an IDEA?

ANSWER: First, review the guidelines for submission by reading Air Force Instruction 38-401. If you have questions on your IDEA such as eligibility or the application process, feel free to call the base IDEA program manager at 247-IDEA (4332). Finally, when you're ready to formally submit your IDEA for consideration, go to the Air Force IDEA web site.

2. What is the difference between AFSO 21 and the IDEA Program?

ANSWER: The IDEA program has a direct link to AFSO 21 objectives as a program that encourages and rewards individuals and teams for finding better, faster, safer ways of accomplishing the mission. AFSO 21 normally takes a "nose to tail" look at processes, involving all parties that own a piece of the process, while the IDEA program rewards individuals or small teams that develop innovative solutions outside of the AFSO 21 framework.

3. How will my money get to me?

ANSWER: Your award money will be sent to your home address in the form of a check. This is why it is very important for you to verify your information when you log onto IDEA Program Data System.

4. Are taxes taken out of my award money?

ANSWER: Yes, standard tax rules apply regardless of your withholding status.

5. What is an SIP?

ANSWER:
A Separate Improvement Process is an IDEA that must have a separate document approved first before you can submit your idea. An example would be you recognize that a crosswalk should be placed near the school so that children can cross safely. This is a great IDEA but to make it eligible you must submit an AF 332 (work order) through Civil Engineer. Once the form has been approved, you may submit your IDEA into IPDS and attach the work order as proof that the work will be accomplished.

6. Who can submit an AF IDEA?

ANSWER: All Air Force military members and federal civilian appropriated fund employees, Air Force Academy cadets, ROTC cadets, Air Force Reserve personnel on active duty orders, including IMA'S, Air National Guard Title 5 USC employees, and Direct-hire non-US citizen employees may submit ideas and are eligible for monetary awards.

Private citizens, non-appropriated finds personnel, contractors, retirees (unless idea was submitted before they retired), and Air National Guard Title 32 military members may submit ideas. However, they are not eligible for monetary awards.
