Important Note on Vertical Datum for the Devils Lake Region:

The North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) replaced the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD 29), previously known as the Sea Level Datum of 1929.   The International Water Institute (IWI) (2009) Red River Basin LiDAR terrain data which these products are based reflect the new NAVD 88 datum, as well as the recent Benson and Nelson County Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs).  However, the Devils Lake USGS Gage (USGS 05056500), Area of Special Consideration of 1460’, and many other commonly referenced elevations such as the top of levee and outlet elevations in the Devils Lake region reflect the NGVD 29 vertical datum.

The elevation difference between NGVD 29 to NAVD 88 varies depending on location, but is approximately 1.2 feet greater for the Devils Lake region.  (eg. 1460’ in NGVD 29 is approximately 1461.2’ in NAVD 88).”
