Securing the Democratic National Convention. Secretary Johnson and senior DHS leadership traveled to Philadelphia today to inspect security operations and contingency planning. Just hours after executing an outstanding security plan for the RNC in Cleveland, the Secret Service is ramping up operations for a second National Security Special Event.
In addition to inspecting convention security in Cleveland last Friday and Philadelphia later this week, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson receives daily intelligence and operational briefings from U.S. Secret Service Director Joe Clancy and his team, who are on the ground in Cleveland. DHS personnel apprise the Secretary of the latest developments concerning the security situation at both conventions.
During National Police Week, DHS employees had the opportunity to honor all law enforcement officers who serve our country, our communities, and our citizens.
Yesterday, while football fans tuned in to see the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers take the field, dozens of components with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) – both seen and unseen – proudly worked to make sure that Super Bowl 50 was a safe and enjoyable experience for players, employees, and fans alike.
On February 3, 2016, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson met with local law enforcement officials and the National Football League (NFL) security team to oversee the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) security operations that will help ensure the safety and security of employees, players and fans during Super Bowl 50.
Now that the Inspector General’s investigation has concluded we will proceed expeditiously in determining accountability for those who violated any laws or policies of this Department. In light of the matters reflected in the report and addendum, and in order to avoid any perception of a conflict of interest, the Director of the Secret Service and I both agree that all decisions concerning accountability for these matters will be made by me. I plan to make these decisions in the coming weeks.
I commend the U.S. Secret Service, together with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, for their outstanding work in the apprehension and extradition of yet another alleged cyber criminal—Sergey Vovnenko. Vovnenko, a Ukrainian citizen, appeared in federal court in Newark today, after extradition from Italy. Vovnenko is charged with conspiring to hack into the computer networks of individual users and corporations to steal log-in credentials and payment card data.
Last week after returning from the United Nations, President Obama commended the United States Secret Service for its extraordinary work providing security for the United Nations General Assembly and the visit by Pope Francis to the United States.
