PEDSAFE

PEDSAFE

Problem: Walking frequently has been overlooked in the quest to build sophisticated transportation systems

The tools available in the Pedestrian Safety Guide and Countermeasure Selection System (PEDSAFE) are designed to enable practitioners to effectively select and review engineering, education, or enforcement treatments to reduce pedestrian deaths and injuries and change motorist and/or pedestrian behaviors.

Solution: Provide practitioners with the latest information available for improving Pedestrian safety and accessibility.

PEDSAFE is an online system designed to assist practitioners with the selection of countermeasures to address pedestrian safety and accessibility problems. It is the next generation of the FHWA report titled Pedestrian Facilities User Guide--Providing Safety and Mobility (FHWA-RD-01-102). PEDSAFE is available in hard copy or on CD-ROM and can be ordered at http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/ped_bike/ped_bike_order.htm.

The PEDSAFE system includes several interactive tools and is designed to:

  • Provide information on the countermeasures available for preventing pedestrian crashes and/or improving motorist and pedestrian behavior.

  • Highlight the purpose, considerations, and cost estimates associated with each countermeasure.

  • Provide a decision process to select the most applicable countermeasures for a specific location.

  • Provide links to case studies showing the various treatments and programs implemented in communities around the country.

  • Provide easy access to resources such as statistics, implementation guidance, and reference materials.

Putting It in Perspective

Every one is a pedestrian and needs to be able to travel safely and provided accessibility.

Annually, about 5,000 pedestrians are killed and approximately 70,000 injured in traffic crashes in the United States.

Successful applications: This project is new, with no known applications to date.

National Deployment Statement

Information on PEDSAFE is detailed in a one-page flyer (FHWA-SA-05-001) that can be distributed at conferences and other events.

National Deployment Goal

Use PEDSAFE in the development and implementation of State and local Pedestrian Safety Action Plans in support of the States' Strategic Highway Safety Plan.

National Deployment Status

PEDSAFE is being used by State and local agencies in the development and implementation of their Pedestrian Safety Action Plans.

PEDSAFE is being used by State and local agencies in the development and implementation of their Pedestrian Safety Action Plans. PEDSAFE is being used as a primary reference document during of the Planning and Designing for Pedestrian Safety workshops and Road Safety Audit for Pedestrians workshops. During 2008, 45 workshops were conducted for more than 1500 engineers, planners, law enforcement, public health professionals, and advocates.

Based upon the MRT Phases and Tracking document the deployment is at Phase 3. More than 10, 000 hard copies of the PEDSAFE guide and CD were disseminated national with special emphasis on the focus States and Cities.

PEDSAFE was incorporated into the national template for the development of Pedestrian Safety Action Plans

PEDSAFE is being discussed in the Pedestrian Safety, RSA, and Intersection Safety, and other workshops and included in National conferences and meeting.

Phase of Deployment

PHASE III-Delivery Activities

  • Face-to-face communication
  • Conduct presentations
  • Conduct pilot
  • Conduct training and education
  • Public/ private partnerships
