Livability and Sustainability
Management and operations (M&O) strategies that are incorporated into transportation plans through planning for operations can positively impact livability and sustainability. M&O strategies can increase travel choices and efficiency for all modes—including transit, bicycling, and walking—while reducing emissions and resource use. For instance, a roadway can be operated to optimize only vehicle travel movement, or it can be operated to improve multimodal system performance through: enabling more efficient, reliable transit trips; redesigning existing roads to improve vehicle throughput and multimodal access; adding bicycle lanes and making it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross intersections; and developing ridesharing programs and parking management strategies that support moving more people with the same amount of infrastructure.
