Using SaferBus
Users can search FMCSA data using a company’s name, DOT number or MC number. The SaferBus app will display “NOT ALLOWED TO OPERATE” in bold red for those companies that have either been placed out of service by FMCSA or do not have the proper operating authority.
By tapping the company name, the company’s place of business, telephone number and number and type of vehicles is displayed. The app also helps users review performance data in the five Behavioral Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs). Users can view more detail by selecting any of the BASIC icons to the right of the company name.
FMCSA prioritizes bus companies for enforcement intervention by comparing their performance against other bus companies – using a percentile from 0 (best) to 100 (worst). BASIC percentiles are calculated for companies with sufficient data related to each BASIC. A lower percentile indicates a higher rate of observed compliance in that category.
Indicates that the company’s performance in that category exceeds FMCSA's enforcement intervention threshold, based either on roadside inspection data and/or citation of one or more serious violations within the past 12 months. FMCSA may be working with the carrier to improve compliance in the identified BASICs, or may be pursuing an intervention action and increased roadside inspections.
The BASIC categories are described below.
Unsafe Driving – driving in a dangerous or reckless manner, such as speeding, improper lane changes, or inattentive (distracted) driving.
Fatigued Driving – driving while fatigued or ill – or not complying with Hours of Service regulations
Driver Fitness – drivers who should not be driving a bus due to lack of training or experience, failing to have a commercial driver’s license, or being medically unqualified to drive a bus
Controlled Substances and/or Alcohol – drivers who operate a bus while impaired by alcohol, illegal drugs, or misuse of legal medications
Vehicle Maintenance – Failure to properly maintain a bus – such as faulty brakes or lights, or other mechanical defects
Safety Complaints
Users can submit any bus safety-related concern by selecting the yellow “Leave Complaint” button to access the National Consumer Complaint Database or by calling the Hotline at 1-888-DOT-SAFT (1-888-368-7238), M-F, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. eastern time.
