Taking selfies on train tracks: a dangerous new trend is ending lives

Railroad crossing safety & tresspass prevention: by the numbers

96% of all rail-related fatalities and injuries occur at railroad crossings or due to trespassing. Sadly, almost all of these deaths and injuries are preventable.

Trespassing along railroad rights-of-way is the leading cause of rail-related deaths in America. Nationally, more than 400 trespass fatalities occur each year, the vast majority of which are preventable.

Railroad crossing incidents are the second leading cause of rail-related deaths in America.

With the assistance of FRA's programs, the number of fatalities has been reduced by 54% over the last two decades. FRA's Railroad Crossing Safety and Trespasser Prevention Division remains committed to continuing this trend.
