Summary

We released our fourth update of airline industry metrics. We found the airline industry is facing its greatest challenge since deregulation, as a result of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the war in Iraq, and the weakness in business travel that has persisted since early 2001. The metrics were developed as a way to monitor airline industry trends relating to domestic system demand and capacity, performance, finances, and air service at small airports. Although subject to change, these metrics provide decision makers with past, present, and future indicators of domestic service levels and general state of the airline industry.
