Collaborations

The Naval Research Laboratory places a high value on external collaboration, and we seek partnerships with academic, industrial, and government agencies that can assist us in applying cutting-edge science and technology to Navy problems. Collaborations take many forms and may include contracts, grants, workshops, visiting scientist and summer faculty programs, scientist exchange programs, and participation in field programs and other multi-agency efforts. Of course, many collaborations develop because scientists at different institutions discover that they have a common interest and each offers their unique talents and individual resources to the problem. Over the past few years, NRL Marine Meteorology Division has had a number of fruitful national and international collaborations, many of which continue today.

Opportunities for Visiting Scientists

The Division believes in maintaining a strong visiting scientist program to help renew and invigorate the Division’s research program. The NRL General Laboratory Scientific Interchange Programs provide resident opportunities for summer faculty and postdoctoral fellowships. Opportunities for long-term visits in Monterey are available through the UCAR Visiting Scientist Program. Additionally, the ONR International Field Office may support shorter-term visits to NRL for international scientists working on problems of interest to the Navy, who might not otherwise be able to make the visit. Several of these short visits have developed into long-term collaborations.

 Local Collaborations and Opportunities

The Marine Meteorology Division has strong ties to the other Navy and government institutions in the Monterey area. We share a campus with our major customer, Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, and with theNational Weather Service Forecast Office for the San Francisco Bay region, with whom we routinely share data. The Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey supports a strong research program in atmospheric and oceanographic science and NRL maintains a number of active research collaborations with the faculty and staff in the Meteorology and Oceanography Departments . NPS and NRL also interact academically. Several NRL scientists have pursued and obtained advanced degrees in meteorology and other related disciplines while working at NRL. Giving back to NPS, NRL scientists often present classroom lectures and seminars at NPS and have served on thesis committees of NPS M.S. and Ph.D. candidates. Locally, the DOD institutions in the Monterey Bay area are installing a DOD intranet, which will provide new connectivity between NRL, FNMOC, and NPS, as well as the Defense Language Institute in Monterey and the Defense Management Data Center at the former Ft. Ord.

The Monterey Bay area is home to more than two dozen agencies and institutions that are active in marine science research, education, and operations. Many of these institutions have increased their level of interaction and collaboration with one another through the formation of the Monterey Bay Crescent Ocean Research Consortium. NRL’s Marine Meteorology Division is a non-signatory member of MBCORC and an NRL management liaison frequently attends meetings with the directors of the other institutions to stay abreast of the activities of the group. NRL also has active collaborations with several of the MBCORC member institutions. In 2002, the Marine Meteorology Division hosted a workshop for local agencies to learn more about one another’s capabilities and to discuss how we could work more closely together to better observe and model the physical characteristics and related biological populations of the Monterey Bay coastal region.
