Improved Data Modem (IDM) Redesign
The goal of the Improved Data Modem (IDM) Obsolescence Redesign was to provide an alternative to Last Time Buy or expensive Prime Contractor redesign. The secondary goal was to reduce cost by use of the organic Government industrial base. The IDM redesign was performed by the Systems Development Group (SDG) at the AMRDEC Software Engineering Directorate.
Manage Obsolescence – Reduce Cost
The IDM provides network access to exchange allied and enemy location data. There were obsolete parts and old software in the product, forcing a redesign. The SDG addressed these issues with a full hardware and software solution based on modular design and open architecture.
Modular Design, Commercial Components
The redesign effort for the IDM relied on a model based engineering approach. Model based engineering allows requirements to be developed and validated before building hardware, reducing the need for costly respins. Industry was engaged to provide commercial components.
Government Owned Design
Since the IDM redesign was performed by AMRDEC, the Government was able to retain ownership of the IDM technical data. This includes all specifications, software, digital product data, test documentation, and work instructions.
Government Manufacturing
The AMRDEC team worked with Letterkenny Army Depot (LEAD) to establish a production line for the IDM. Over the past two years, LEAD has manufactured over 900 IDM units, with costs less than those of the commercial predecessor.
Flight-Worthy Software
The software redesign provided significant cost savings by reusing existing design and software, and updating it to ensure Government Unlimited Rights. The software has been certified acceptable for use in several aircraft.
