Special Use Airspace

Special use airspace or special area of operation (SAO) is the designation for airspace in which certain activities must be confined, or where limitations may be imposed on aircraft operations that are not part of those activities. Certain special use airspace areas can create limitations on the mixed use of airspace.

Airspace related to Atterbury-Muscatatuck-Jefferson

RANGE SCHEDULING

Excluding observance of holidays the Atterbury Range administrative office is open Monday Friday (7:00L-16:30L), Saturday Sunday as required. All Mondays may not be manned. The bombing range is normally available for scheduled activity from 9:00L 16:00L. Zulu times are 14:00Z 21:00Z (13:00Z 20:00Z during daylight savings time). Other times are available upon request. Requests are due by the first day of the month prior. Users are encouraged to utilize Centralized Scheduling Enterprise (CSE) for submitting monthly schedule requests at: https://CSEAF.Eglin.af.mil/CSE/Home.aspx

RANGE DESCRIPTION

General: The Atterbury restricted area, R-3401A/B, is located approximately 20 NM south-southeast of Indianapolis, IN. Shared use of the area by both Army and Air National Guard units and other reserve units requires all using units to be aware of existing restrictions. Note: R-3401A (SFC-FL250) is located over approximately 33,000 acres of federally owned land. The Air National Guard has joint use of 650 acres of Atterbury for use as the Air-to-Ground Gunnery Range, while the Army uses the balance of the training area for infantry, artillery, air cavalry, and engineering training.

Airspace Description:

R-3401A: Surface - FL250 (FL400 available with prior request)

R-3401B: 1,200’ AGL – 14,000’ MSL

(Avoid over flight of Cordry/Sweetwater Lakes, N 39º 18’ W 86º 08’)

Racer ATCAA FL180 – FL250

Racer MOA “C” 500’ AGL – 17,999’ MSL

Racer MOA “D” 14,000’ AGL – 17,999’ MSL

ALL OF THE ABOVE AIRSPACE WILL BE SCHEDULED “HOT” WITH ANY RANGE ACTIVITY.

Racer MOA “A” 500’ AGL – 3,999’ MSL

Racer MOA “B” 4,000’ MSL – 8,000’ MSL

RACER “A” AND “B” MOAs ARE SCHEDULED BY USER REQUEST ONLY, PREFERABLY ONE DAY PRIOR, BUT NO LATER THAN 1 HOUR PRIOR TO SCHEDULED USE!

MOAs are not available for use when the range office is closed.

RANGE SCHEDULING

Jefferson Range hours of operation:

Tuesday through Friday Days – 1300-2100Z

Tuesday through Thursday Nights – As scheduled

Saturday and Sunday As scheduled

* Other times are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Airspace hours of operation:

R-3403A is available for scheduling daily from 0630 to 2400 local time.

R-3403B is available for scheduling daily from 0800 to 2300 local time.

JPG A/B/C/D MOAs are activated in conjunction with R-3403A/B and available for scheduling daily from 0800-2300 local time: other times by NOTAM.

Unit Monthly Requests. Units should submit a monthly request for range times to Jefferson Range scheduling no later than the 1st of the preceding month. Requests can be sent to the range scheduler electronically, by phone or utilizing the Common Scheduling Enterprise (CSE) network. The schedule will be completed and mailed by the 5th of the preceding month. Requests should include the JPG MOAs. After the 5th of the preceding month, all requests are on a first come first served basis.

POL Target Scheduling. Based upon the impact of the heavyweight footprints on the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge activities, the remote POL target requires, at a minimum, a 24 hour notice prior to use. Anticipate restrictions to POL use during the months of May, October, and November for which the USFWS pre-empts military use with public hunting.

Changes to Range Schedule. Units wishing to change or add range times should coordinate such requests as soon as possible through Jefferson Range scheduling to allow coordination with Indy Center/FAA. For changes to a previously scheduled airspace/range times coordination must be accomplished at least 30 minutes prior to the time of use. For additional airspace/range times NOT previously scheduled coordination must be accomplished at least 2 hours and 30 minutes prior to the anticipated time of use.

Airspace

R-3403A covers JPG boundaries from surface to FL430. R-3403B airspace is 1200 AGL to FL180 overlaid by the Ripley ATCAA to FL240 above. Normal operations require airspace to FL240 for R-3403A/B and the Ripley ATCAA. Airspace up to FL430 over R3403A may be available with prior coordination.

There are also four MOAs adjacent to the restricted airspace. The JPG A, B, C MOAs and the C ATCAA are located to the Southwest and the JPG D MOA is located to the north. Normal operations for the JPG B MOA are to 16,000 MSL however FL180 can be requested.
