Suicide is an act of despair, one of an absolute perception of isolation and loneliness. However, few people are truly isolated in their daily lives. As friends, family members, battle buddies, commanders, senior NCOs, even co-workers, there is a great deal we can be aware of and watch for to help prevent suicide. No one can be responsible for another individual's feelings or their actions, but knowing the signs of a potential suicide can help put valuable resources into place to prevent it.


Suicide prevention, like all leadership challenges, is a Commander’s program and every leader’s responsibility at all levels. The success of the Army Suicide Prevention Program rests upon proactive, caring and courageous people who recognize the imminent danger and then take immediate action to save a life." There are many resources available to those men and women in supervisory and command positions. Prevention provides advice on handling situations which might indicate a potential suicide, and advances some of the warning signs of individuals in trouble.
